Restored stonework around a heritage doorway with fresh lime pointing
Service · Stonework

Rebuilding, repair and restoration of historic stone.

From loose rubble walls to carved detail, our stonework restores structural integrity while respecting the character of the original build.

Old stonework was assembled by hand, one decision at a time. Repair should be no different. We work stone-by-stone: understanding the coursing, the through-stones, the bedding and the way the wall was originally built.

This is the difference between rebuilding a wall and covering it. Where stones have failed, moved or been lost we source sympathetic replacements, and we finish with lime pointing appropriate to the wall.

Signs you may need this
  • Bulging, leaning or loose sections of rubble stone wall.
  • Missing quoins, cills or lintels.
  • Fireplace or flue stonework that has moved or fractured.
  • Previous repairs carried out in unsuitable modern materials.
What Phoenix Stone does differently
  • Slow, careful dismantling — reading the wall before touching it.
  • Reuse of original stone wherever possible, sympathetically sourced replacements where not.
  • Correct bedding and through-stones for structural integrity.
  • Finished with lime pointing tuned to the wall.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Can you match old carved stone?+

Yes — through sourcing, dressing on site and, where needed, working with masons for carved elements.

Do you take on chimney and fireplace work?+

Regularly. Fireplaces and flues combine structural, thermal and heritage concerns and reward careful, considered work.

What about listed or protected buildings?+

We work within conservation-led principles and can co-ordinate with the relevant conservation officers or architects.
